Smoothies are an ideal food for those of us with a compromised health status, who have less than perfect teeth and/or who need an extra nutritional boost. The fact that the ingredients are blended into tiny pieces means that the fibre is broken down, allowing the nutrients to ‘spill’ out of the cells which in turn allows the body to more easily absorb and assimilate the nutrients in the ingredients. Smoothies also encourage our creativity as we combine vegetables with fruit, additionally benefiting from the healthy oils which are in vegetables.
The most ‘cheap & cheerful’ DTES NH smoothie recipe:
Fill the blender 1/2 full with tap water, then add a large handful of spinach, 1 ripe banana and blend. The banana acts as an emulsifier, making the smoothie so creamy that you soon forget it’s water based.
Please remember that the more brown spots on the banana skin, the better it’s suited for the world of smoothies.
