Roving Community Kitchen

In February 2009 the DTES NH created its 2nd volley of Nutritional Outreach with our Roving Community Kitchen, wherein we visit sister organizations [eg InSite’s Chill Room, the Aboriginal Front Door, Oppenheimer Park, VANDU] sharing the wonders of the humble blender and the unctuous, nutrient rich smoothies which they produce. In a spirit of Nutritional Solidarity we engage hundreds of low-income DTES residents for whom a traditional Community Kitchen holds no allure, in concise nutritional education. For the moment our financial resources for this program limit it to one day a month and the day we chose is Welfare Tuesday [the eve of the issuing of Social Assistance payments]. It’s a timely date as it reminds our neighbours that for between $15 for a second hand blender or $30 for a new one, a blender is an item which could be used in an SRO [Single Room Occupancy] hotel room.
