The Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House and Carnegie Community Centre first produced HomeGround as a 3 day event in the winter of 2009. It was then expanded in 2010 in an attempt to offer additional sanctuary and sustenance to our most vulnerable neighbours during the period of the Olympics, as the Games adversely impacted the inner city where sidewalks serve as the veritable living room of the homeless and underhoused. HomeGround 2011 in February has food as its theme and consists of a week long series of activities which will be followed by a 3 day tented event at Oppenheimer Park.
Please Note: HomeGround is not open to the general public, nor does it welcome media of any sort – including community members with recording devices, social media or mainstream media, as DTES sidewalks and parks are the social spaces of Downtown Eastside homeless and underhoused residents.
