Stakeholder Workshops

Stakeholder Workshops

In October 2009 Potluck Café and the DTES Neighbourhood House received 6 months of funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to pursue our work in creating community based solutions to:

Increase the availability, accessibility, affordability and choice of quality, nutritious food security solutions for residents of the DTES. Specifically, to design an Action Plan which ensures affordable access to nutritious meals each day for the most vulnerable of DTES residents – those living with HIV, AIDS, Hep C, Diabetes and/or sheer malnourishment.

Project Timeline:                  October 1st, 2009 to March 31st, 2010

Interim Deadlines:

  • Community Report: December 31st, 2009
  • Draft Action Plan: January 31st, 2010
  • Final Action Plan: March 15th, 2010

Agenda

1. (20 Minutes) Group Reflection: What’s your fondest personal food memory? Why are you here today?

2. (90 Minutes) A Roadmap of Solutions: DTES stakeholders have finite energy, time & resources so how can we use them better to reach the outcome above. Some possible solutions include:

  • (15 Minutes) Food Procurement Solution:  To create a centrally organized food ordering system for both purchased or donated food.
  • (15 Minutes) Community Capacity Building Solution:  To create skill building and employment opportunities for DTES residents through the preparation, cooking and delivery of food in the community.
  • (15 Minutes) Food Distribution Solution:  To create more efficient methods of food distribution in the DTES ie; multiple distribution points in the neighbourhood.
  • (15 Minutes) Setting Quality and Food Nutrition Standards:  To create food quality and nutritional standards for the DTES that can be used to assess the suitability of purchased or donated food.
  • (15 Minutes) Menu Development:  To develop quality, nutritious menus that can be shared among DTES food providers and individual residents.
  • (15 Minutes) Professional Support:  To create food activist teams made up of food service professionals who can support DTES organizations in the set up of their food programs and facilities to increase efficiency and food safety.

3. (10 Minutes) Next Steps

b)     Identify who is interested in participating in working groups to create these solutions

c)     Identify which specific working group(s) people are interested in acting with?
